What is EMFACE™?

EMFACE™ is a revolutionary device from BTL. The company that brought you Emsculpt NEO.

EMFACE™ combines synchronized radio frequency and HIFES energies. HIFES stands for High-Intensity Focused Electric Stimulation. Radiofrequency tightens the skin while HIFES contracts facial muscles 70000 times in 20 minutes, leading to tightening of the facial muscle. They call EMFACE a nonsurgical facelift device.

Clinical studies concluded that after completing the course of treatments,

participants saw, on average, a 37% reduction in wrinkles,
30% increase in facial muscle tone,
and 23% lifting effect within three months of the treatment completion.

This is all accomplished without any surgery or no needles. That’s the beauty of EMFACE.

Answers to frequently asked EMFACE™ questions (FAQs):

How does EMFACE work?

EMFACE combines synchronized radio frequency and HIFES (high-intensity focused electrical stimulation).  Radiofrequency warms the skin to 42 degrees, stimulating collagen and elastin production and skin tightening.  HIFES contracts frontalis muscles and zygomaticus major muscles 70,000 times in 20 minutes, leading to an increase in resting muscle tension which means muscle lifting.  You will get a facelift effect without surgery.

What should I expect from my EMFACE treatment?

After four 20-minute sessions one week apart, you can expect muscle strengthening, muscle tightening, muscle lifting, and skin tightening.  The overall result is a nonsurgical facelift.  Usually, you can see some results after four sessions, but you will notice the maximal result about three months after the treatments.

Does the EMFACE treatment hurt?

It does NOT hurt at all.  You can feel the gentle muscle twitching and warmth on the skin from RF. During the treatment, a numbing cream is typically applied to the treatment area to minimize any discomfort.
While the treatment is generally well-tolerated, some individuals may experience mild discomfort or a sensation of heat during the procedure. However, the level of discomfort can vary depending on individual pain tolerance and the specific area being treated.
After the treatment, some individuals may experience mild redness, swelling, or tenderness in the treated area, which usually subsides within a few days.

Should I still get cheek fillers if I get the EMFACE treatment?

Because the EMFACE gives you a significant lifting effect, you may not need any filler.  Even if you need fillers, you will need less than if you had not done the EMFACE.  So they can work together very well where needed.

Who is right candidate for EMFACE?

The right candidate for EMFACE is someone who has mild to moderate signs of aging and wants to improve the overall look and texture of their skin.
EMFACE is a good option for individuals who are not ready or willing to undergo invasive treatments such as surgery. However, it is important to note that EMFACE may not be suitable for everyone. For example, individuals with certain medical conditions or skin conditions may not be good candidates for EMFACE.
It is important to consult with a qualified medical professional who is trained in EMFACE treatment to determine if it is the right option for you.

What areas can be treated with EMFACE?

EMFACE is for facial lifting and facial skin tightening.  It specifically targets frontalis muscles and zygomaticus major muscles, but the whole face will look lifted. Some of the areas that can be treated with EMFACE include:
Forehead: To reduce the appearance of forehead wrinkles and fine lines.
Eyes: To improve the appearance of crow’s feet and other wrinkles around the eyes.
Cheeks: To improve the texture and firmness of the skin on the cheeks.
Chin and jawline: To contour and tighten the skin around the chin and jawline.
Neck: To tighten and smooth the skin on the neck and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
Around the mouth: To improve the appearance of smile lines, marionette lines, and other wrinkles around the mouth.

How long does it take to see the final result of the EMFACE procedure?

You can see some improvement soon after you complete four treatments.  However, the maximal result will occur about three months after the treatments are completed.

Is there any downtime?

One of the benefits of EMFACE is that there is typically little to no downtime following the procedure.

How does EMFACE compare to surgical facelifts and non-invasive device alternatives?

EMFACE is completely non-surgical.  Therefore, unlike surgical facelifts, there is no risk of anesthesia, infection, and botched jobs.  However, the result is not as dramatic as a surgical facelift.
EMFACE is a brand-new technology, and no other device can compare.

What if the patient doesn’t have any deep wrinkles? Is there a benefit for younger patients?

EMFACE is great for people with fine wrinkles and sagging skin/muscles.  It will help w/ deep wrinkles, but the patient will most likely benefit from combining EMFACE with other modalities, such as RF/micro needling or lasers if she has deep wrinkles.
It is typically easier to prevent than reverse the aging effect.  Therefore, younger patients will certainly benefit from EMFACE for preventing facial drooping.

Can I have EMFACE therapy if I have injectables?

The answer is Yes, you can do EMFACE even after getting injectables. However, it is important to consult with a qualified medical professional who is trained in both EMFACE treatment and injectables to determine if it is safe for you to have EMFACE treatment while you have injectables. Depending on the specific injectable and the area of the face being treated, it is possible to have both treatments done. However, there may be certain situations where it is not recommended to have EMFACE treatment if you have injectables.

Glossary

HIFES – High-Intensity Focused Electric Stimulation (HIFES) is a treatment modality that uses high-frequency, high-energy electrical current to generate heat within a specific area of tissue. It treats various conditions, including cancer and benign tumors, by destroying the targeted tissue through thermal ablation. HIFES uses a special probe inserted into the tissue and then positioned directly at the site of the lesion. The probe generates a high-frequency electrical current, which in turn creates heat, raising the temperature of the targeted tissue to around 90-100°C. This extreme heat causes the proteins in the cells to denature, leading to cell death. It is a minimally invasive procedure, so it does not require a large incision, and recovery time is usually short. It is considered a safe and effective treatment option with minimal complications.

Zygomaticus – The zygomaticus muscle is a muscle of the face that originates from the zygomatic bone (cheek bone) and inserts into the skin and muscle of the upper lip. This muscle is responsible for raising the corners of the mouth, creating a smile. It works in combination with other muscles of the face, such as the orbicularis oculi muscle and the orbicularis oris muscle, to create facial expressions. It is one of the muscles of facial expression and it’s also known as the “smiling muscle” because it pulls the corners of the mouth upward and outward, allowing us to smile. It is also responsible for creating other facial expressions, such as whistling, blowing, and sucking. Damage or weakness of this muscle can result in difficulty smiling or other facial expressions, as well as in Bell’s palsy or other neurological conditions. The zygomaticus muscle can be targeted during surgery or other treatments for conditions such as facial spasms or asymmetry, and also used in aesthetic procedures to improve the appearance of the face.
